Capel, Surrey: a Wealden village of hillforts, brickworks and parish memory

Capel is a village and civil parish in the Mole Valley district of Surrey, lying between Dorking and Horsham in the northern Weald. The parish is large and historically varied, including places such as Beare Green and Coldharbour. Capel’s deeper past is reflected in nearby Anstiebury Camp, a substantial Iron Age hillfort that points to occupation long before the medieval parish took shape. Later centuries saw the village develop around church, manor and farming life, while the wider parish also became known for Quaker history and for brickmaking, particularly at the former Clock House brickworks.
Population: 3,832 inhabitants (civil parish, 2011 census).
Distance: about 5 miles from Dorking and 5 miles from Horsham.
Traditions and culture: Capel combines rural Surrey parish life with a wider Wealden identity shaped by church, Quaker memory, brickmaking and scattered hamlets.
Highlights: St John the Baptist Church, nearby Anstiebury Camp, the countryside around Coldharbour and the Greensand Ridge, and the broader Capel conservation landscape.
