Bougey is a small commune in Haute-Saône, in the rural Hauts du Val de Saône. The 2023 municipal population was 103 for the whole commune, not simply the few streets around its best-known monument; the same census gives a density of 12 residents per square kilometre. INSEE places Bougey in the Jussey living area, a useful regional reference when planning for everyday services. The château, at 2 rue des Fourches, is privately owned and remains the principal visitor attraction documented in the sources consulted.

Read the dates carefully

The château’s own history page says that the seigneurie of Bougey appears in records in 1127, while the first mention of a château there is around 1350. Its architecture page describes a foundation in the early fourteenth century. These are the family’s historical account. The Ministry of Culture’s legal heritage record gives another, more narrowly defined measure: the principal building campaigns date from the last quarter of the sixteenth and the last quarter of the seventeenth century. The entire château was entered in the register of historic monuments by order of 5 August 2020. The dates describe different documentary milestones and should not be collapsed into a single construction year. The owners’ account says that the family has held the property since 1802 and that restoration work has continued in recent decades.

Conservation is still part of the visit story. The owners report that work on the north wing and entrance porch resumed in October 2026, with further work planned for the south tower. The château’s 2026 public season ended on 11 October; visits were guided and seasonal, with out-of-season access by reservation. Check the owners’ current notice before travelling, since both access and work areas can change. The local tourism office also lists exhibitions, craft markets and performances at the château, but each event needs its own current date.

Getting around the area

INSEE data for 2024 show a very small employer base, with agriculture, forestry and fishing the largest sector by number of establishments. This is a rural setting, not a village with a verified range of visitor services. JUSSEY Tourisme’s reception is in Jussey, and Bougey belongs to that town’s official living-area catchment. The tourism office says the area’s walking-trail network is being rehabilitated and that route sheets for departmental cycling loops can be requested. The sources checked do not establish a waymarked walk beginning in Bougey, so do not treat a regional circuit as a local trailhead. Ask the tourism office for current maps, and confirm opening times and transport before setting out.
