Trieste: Adriatic port between Karst and European cultures
Trieste is the capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and overlooks the gulf of the same name, between the Italian peninsula and Istria, a few kilometers from Slovenia. The city combines Mediterranean, Central European and Slavic characteristics and is one of the main Italian and Southern European cargo ports.
History and identity
Trieste was an imperial city and capital of the Austrian coast, before becoming capital of the province of the same name and then of the region. Its position on the Upper Adriatic has made it a bridge between central and southern Europe for centuries, while the port has continued to support the economic and international role of the city.
What to see
The urban center rests largely on flysch, while the Karst plateau is characterized by caves, sinkholes and red earth. The Timavo runs about forty kilometers underground from the caves of San Carancio, re-emerges in San Giovanni di Duino and flows into the gulf. The Rosandra torrent and other waterways, often underground, also belong to this karst landscape.
