Salisbury: A Historic City in Wiltshire
Salisbury is a cathedral city in southeast Wiltshire, close to Salisbury Plain and set where the Avon, Nadder and Bourne meet. Its compact historic centre grew beside a new cathedral in the Middle Ages, while the much older settlement of Old Sarum occupies a hill to the north. History and identity
The earlier centre was Old Sarum, a strategic hilltop where an Iron Age hillfort was built between about 600 and 300 BC. The site was associated with Roman, Saxon and Norman occupation, and a cathedral once stood there. During the thirteenth century a new cathedral was built near the rivers, and the settlement that developed around it received a city charter in 1227 under the name New Sarum. The city later became known simply as Salisbury.

Old Sarum offers the clearest link with the settlement that preceded modern Salisbury.
