Ansty, Wiltshire: a small village of Hospitaller history and old maypole custom

Ansty is a small village and civil parish in south Wiltshire, just north of the A30 between Shaftesbury and Salisbury. From the early 13th century until the Dissolution, the manor belonged to the Knights Hospitallers, who established a preceptory here. The village church of St James has medieval fabric, while the manor house and former preceptory buildings give the settlement unusual historic depth for so small a place.

Distance: roughly 12 miles east of Shaftesbury and about 20 miles west of Salisbury.
