Pian Camuno: a gateway to Lake Iseo and the Val Camonica
Where the Val Camonica opens out just above the northern shore of Lake Iseo, Pian Camuno spreads across the valley floor and climbs the lower slopes of the mountains. A town of around 4,800 people in the province of Brescia, it is a handy base for exploring one of Lombardy's most rewarding valleys.
Between lake and mountains
Within its territory, high above the valley, lies part of the ski resort of Montecampione, while down below the shores of Lake Iseo and the spa town of Darfo Boario Terme are only a short distance away. The valley is famous for its prehistoric rock engravings, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for walking and cycling routes such as the old Via Valeriana and the Oglio cycle path.
A long history
Settled since the days of the ancient Camunni and the Romans, the village was given in the 8th century to the great convent of Santa Giulia in Brescia, under whose authority it long remained. Leonardo da Vinci even marked the place on his map of the valley in 1508. In the old centre, the medieval Poiatti tower recalls those distant times.
Getting there
Pian Camuno lies in the lower Val Camonica just above Lake Iseo, around sixty kilometres from Brescia and about ninety-five kilometres from Milan.
