Nerja: coast, cave and relief of the Axarquía
Nerja is the easternmost municipality of the Axarquía of Malaga. The Almijara mountain range occupies a large part of its territory and descends through ravines towards the Mediterranean. The Chíllar River rises in the mountains and flows into the urban center.
History and identity
The Nerja cave preserves an important prehistoric record with Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age occupations. Some paintings and organic remains have produced very ancient dates that continue to be treated with scientific caution. The current name derives from Narixa, a name used during Muslim rule.
What to see
The cave is a site and visitable space with its own conditions, located outside the central promenade. The municipal landscape includes the coast, the Chíllar River and heights such as Navachica within an abrupt relief. An urban visit, an entrance to the cave and a route through the mountains should not be confused.
