Lauterbrunnen – mountain heights and historical site
Lauterbrunnen is a municipality in the Bernese Oberland, whose area extends from the valley floor to an altitude of 4,158 meters. The municipality includes Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Mürren, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh. The Weisse Lütschine flows through the valley, while steep rock faces and numerous waterfalls characterize the landscape.
History and Identity
The place appears in 1240 as claro fonte and in 1304 as Luterbrunnen; the name refers to clear springs and streams. After 1300, settlers from Valais came to the back of the valley. For a long time, the valley was economically, judicially and ecclesiastically under the Augustinian Priory of Interlaken. In 1487 and 1488 the Talleute built their own church without monastic permission. A wave of plague in 1669 claimed 360 of the then 580 inhabitants within a few months.
Sights
The Trümmelbach Falls fall in several cascades inside a mountain and are one of the most famous destinations in the community. The Staubbach Falls inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to write his “Song of the Spirits over the Waters” in 1779. Wengen, Mürren and Gimmelwald show different locations above the valley, while Stechelberg and Isenfluh offer further starting points for the mountain world.
