Bassano del Grappa: The City of the Alpini
Bassano del Grappa is an Italian municipality of 42,169 inhabitants, located in the north-east of the Italian peninsula, and is considered the 'world capital of the Alpini'. The city has a semi-continental climate with cold winters and hot summers, and offers a unique atmosphere with control over the countryside, river and traffic routes.
History and identity
From 1404 to 1797 Bassano was the capital of the Venetian Bassanese regiment, administratively separated from the other centers of the mainland dominions. The modern link with the Alpini revolves around the Ponte Vecchio, also known as the Alpini Bridge: the National Alpine Association awarded it the honorary title of world capital of the Alpini in 2008 and the city council defined it as the City of the Alpini in 2021.
What to see
The Ponte Vecchio is the symbolic monument and introduces the relationship between the center and the Brenta, at the point where the river leaves the mountain canal. The Venetian Prealps, the Asiago plateau and Monte Grappa define the horizon. The finds from the necropolis of San Giorgio di Angarano and the settlements near Monte Castellaro and Boschetto document a presence prior to the Romans.
