Arezzo: art, squares and history of eastern Tuscany
Arezzo occupies a hill in eastern Tuscany and preserves a historic center on several levels. Piazza Grande, churches and museums tell of Etruscan, medieval and Renaissance phases. The city continues to be a production center, also known for goldsmithing.
History and identity
Ancient Arretium was an important Etruscan and Roman center. In the Middle Ages Arezzo was an independent municipality before Florentine domination. Piero della Francesca painted the cycle of the Legend of the True Cross, one of the main works of the Italian Renaissance, in the Basilica of San Francesco.
What to see
Piazza Grande is surrounded by buildings from different eras and hosts the Giostra del Saracino. San Francesco often requires reservations for frescoes. The cathedral, the Vasari house and the archaeological museum add different perspectives; the Medici fortress offers elevated green spaces.
