Amboise: royal residences above the Loire
Amboise occupies both banks of the Loire, dominated by a promontory bearing the royal castle. The city was a favored place of residence for the kings of France during the Renaissance. Its interest is based on the link between fortress, royal residence, commercial city and river landscape.
History and identity
The castle was transformed under Charles VIII and his successors, combining medieval defenses and Renaissance architecture. Francis I welcomed Leonardo da Vinci at Clos Lucé, where the artist died in 1519. The Saint-Hubert chapel of the castle is traditionally presented as his current burial place.
What to see
The royal castle offers terraces, accommodation and views of the Loire. Le Clos Lucé presents the life and works of Leonardo in a separate residence with park. The Château Gaillard and the streets of the center complete the story, but each site has its ticket office. The quays allow you to observe the river and its variations.
Understanding the place
Planning two major monuments in one day is more realistic than wanting to see everything. Climbs, gardens and stairs take time. Traffic and parking become difficult in high season; the train serves the opposite bank. The levels of the Loire and the works may modify walks and access.
