Villamor de los Escuderos: A Gothic-Renaissance Gem in the Guareña Region
Villamor de los Escuderos is a municipality in the comarca of La Guareña, in the province of Zamora, in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It covers an area of 56.27 km² at an average altitude of 780 metres, set amid the Castilian plateau between cereal fields, vineyards and the wide open plains typical of the Zamora landscape.
History The name of the municipality has deep medieval roots. The toponym "Villamor" most likely derives from "Villamayor" through a characteristically Leonese phonetic evolution, first documented in 1259, when it appears as "Villa Mayor" in a charter confirmation. In the Middle Ages it was incorporated into the Kingdom of León, repopulated under the authority of the Leonese monarchs and linked for centuries to the bishopric of Zamora. In the early modern period it formed part of the province of Toro, and with the provincial reorganisation of 1833 it was definitively assigned to Zamora, falling under the judicial district of Fuentesaúco until that district was dissolved in 1983.
Heritage The municipality's most outstanding monument is the parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption (Nuestra Señora de la Asunción), considered the only vaulted Gothic-Renaissance church in the province of Zamora. It was begun by master architect Juan Gil de Hontañón and completed in the mid-16th century by his son Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón — the same architect who worked on Salamanca Cathedral. The building features a Latin cross plan, a Gothic ribbed-vault interior, and a beautiful Renaissance north portal bearing the coat of arms of Bishop Antonio del Águila. Alongside the church, the village retains its Plaza Mayor, an old washing place, a historic central fountain, and a dense riparian woodland along the Arroyo de Carreteros stream.
Gastronomy Villamor de los Escuderos belongs to the Regulatory Council of the Fuentesaúco Chickpea, a pulse of recognised quality throughout Spain. Its proximity to Salamanca brings the influence of La Armuña, while its closeness to the Sayago and Aliste regions ensures excellent beef.
