Spoleto: Umbrian city between theatre, fortress and aqueduct
Spoleto rises from the Umbrian slopes towards the Rocca Albornoziana. Roman monuments, medieval churches and cultural spaces are distributed over steep differences in level. The Festival dei Due Mondi has added an international dimension to the performing arts since 1958.
History and identity
The Roman city left the theatre, Drusus' arch and other structures. The cathedral preserves a Romanesque façade and frescoes by Filippo Lippi. The fortress was built in the 14th century as part of papal control; the nearby Ponte delle Torri has its origins and construction phases discussed.
What to see
Piazza del Duomo is the scenic center. Mechanized routes help to reach the fortress and the upper part. The archaeological museum, San Salvatore and San Pietro show different eras. The tour of the Rocca opens up views of the valley and Monteluco.
