Motteggiana: river landscapes and the memory of the Mantuan plain

Motteggiana is a municipality in the province of Mantua, in Lombardy, set in the flat river country south of Mantua. The municipal territory stretches for more than 15 km along the southern bank of one of the most scenic sections of the Mantuan Po. Its modern identity is closely linked to agriculture, the Po plain and the canals of the lower Mantuan area, especially the Zara canal. The local historical and planning documentation also preserves the memory of the Forte di Motteggiana, built in 1861, and of the historic rural courts scattered across the municipality.
