Gorizia: Culture, History and Environment
Gorizia is located at the eastern end of the Friulian plain, on the border between Italy and Slovenia and on the slopes of the Karst. Its location at the confluence of the Isonzo and Vipava valleys made it a point of contact between Romance, Slavic and Germanic cultures.
History and identity
The territory of present-day Nova Gorica was part of the municipality of Gorizia until 1947, when the Treaty of Paris assigned Istria and a large part of Venezia Giulia to Yugoslavia. Today Gorizia forms an urban area integrated with Nova Gorica and San Pietro-Vertoiba, maintaining the traces of frontier history in the daily landscape.
What to see
The Isonzo enters Italian territory right near Gorizia and visually connects the city to the Slovenian Gorizia area. Across the border lies Nova Gorica, part of the same urban area. The Collio hills, known for their vineyards and DOC wines, surround the plain; the bora coming from the Vipava valley is another characteristic element of the area.
