Gaeta: Roman history and landscape on the Tyrrhenian gulf
Gaeta is a municipality in Lazio overlooking the gulf of the same name, which extends from the Circeo promontory to Capo Miseno. Between Gaeta Vecchia and Serapo stands Monte Orlando, a natural and historical element that dominates the coastal landscape.
History and identity
The first significant settlements date back to the 12th-13th century BC; later the territory belonged to the Aurunci and came under Roman influence in 345 BC. In Roman times Gaeta became a renowned holiday resort, also favored by the Via Flacca. Numerous vestiges recall this phase.
What to see
Monte Orlando preserves on its summit the Mausoleum of Lucius Munazio Plancus, consul and general of the age of Caesar, Anthony and Augustus.
