Dürnstein: Danube town between monastery, ruins and vineyards
Dürnstein is located in the Wachau between the Danube and steep vineyard terraces. The blue tower profile of the monastery, the narrow old town and the castle ruins characterize the place. The Wachau is registered as a cultural landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
History and Identity
The English King Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner in the castle above the town in 1192/93. The former Augustinian canons' monastery acquired its distinctive shape in the Baroque period. Viticulture and Danube shipping influenced the settlement and economy for a long time.

A tour takes you through the Kremser Tor, the old town and to the monastery. The climb to the ruins is steep, rocky and exposed to the sun. Views of the river and terraces open up from above. The banks of the Danube and piers are work and traffic areas.
