Bale-Valle: The Stone Village at the Heart of Istria
Bale (Italian: Valle d'Istria) is a small municipality perched 140 metres above sea level in south-western Istria, Croatia, at the crossroads of routes leading to Rovinj, Pula, and Trieste. The municipality has a population of 1,170 inhabitants (2021 census) and, lying just 5 kilometres from the Adriatic coast, combines the charm of a medieval stone village with the richness of vineyards and olive groves.
History The first documented mention of the settlement dates from 965, recorded as Castrum Vallis —literally "valley fortress," referring to its position among hills— although archaeological evidence points to Roman occupation from the 1st century AD as part of the defensive chain along the Via Flavia. During the Middle Ages, the village grew around the medieval castle of the noble Soardo and Bembo families, constructed in the 15th century. Under Venetian rule (15th–18th centuries), Bale acquired its present urban layout of cobblestone alleyways and stone archways. After 1945 much of its Italian population emigrated, and the municipality is today officially bilingual (Croatian and Italian).
Heritage The most prominent building is the Soardo-Bembo Palace, formed by two square defensive towers joined by a Gothic-Renaissance residential wing from the 16th century, considered one of Croatia's 30 most important monuments. Beside the palace stands the 14th-century medieval loggia, a testament to Venetian influence. The Parish Church of St Julian, its campanile visible for kilometres around, was built in the 19th century on the foundations of an earlier temple. Near the municipality, fossils of the dinosaur Histriasaurus boscarollii were discovered and are now preserved in the local museum.
Gastronomy and culture Bale is famous for its olive oil —its olive groves produce internationally award-winning varieties— and its Malvasia and Teran wines. Each summer it hosts the Last Minute Open Jazz Festival in its medieval squares. The Ulika gallery hosts the annual art exhibition "Castrum Vallis," which has been running since 1964.
